HISTORY
The Big Hetero brand originated in Florida in the late-1990’s as a micro-batch t-shirt company focused on fun and surf. There weren’t very many of these made back then and we doubt any still exist. When the original founder went off to college a few years later, he met some friends who shared in his vision of a line of clothing based simply on fun and a celebration of straightness. With the help of those three friends, Big Hetero became somewhat of a local legend in the Chicago area, and the brand sold products word-of-mouth and through referral-based methods. They sold products out of the back of their cars, at college events, and wherever else they could find a customer. With all of them having different skills, the four friends — including the founder — eventually dissolved the corporation and stopped selling and marketing in 2004. They had a solid run and stayed good friends as they all went onto sucessful careers in accounting, real estate, psychology and graphic design.
The too-soon passing of their friend, the original founder, at age 53, brought the friends together again. With the stories that dominate today’s news, the three remaining friends decided to give Big Hetero another go. A new vision for the company and a voice of reason in the sometime’s insane conversation about what’s acceptable and natural in the world we live in.
MISSION
At Big Hetero we think humanity works better when we all get along, so that’s our only goal. We think straight is great, but it’s a big planet and there’s enough real estate for all of us. We might not be for everybody, but that’s OK. We aren’t worried about getting cancelled and we aren’t ‘woke’. Life is too short to go around hatin’ on people, so we don’t. Big Hetero is a celebration of who we are, but it’s not a dig on who you might be. Plus, the good book says to love our neighbors, and we think that includes everybody!
